UPRISING: a musical theatre revolution - Dates and Details Revealed

MTEXPERIMENTS ANNOUNCES FULL DETAILS OF UPRISING: A MUSICAL THEATRE REVOLUTION

Experience a brand-new staging of Jonathan Larson’s RENT & New Musical Theatre in an evening like no other…

We’re thrilled to finally reveal full details for uprising a musical theatre revolution: a one of a kind evening of theatre where new British Musicals will be showcased prior to our feature presentation: a dynamic new staging of RENT on 8th-10th July 2020 at Derby Theatre.

Each evening commences with a series of new musicals showcased in a Thirty Minute preview. Hosted on the Main Stage at Derby Theatre, these semi-staged performances allowing you to see a new work at its genesis & provides a unique opportunity for UK Musical Theatre artists.

Artistic Director Matt Powell comments: “In the development of musical theatre, regional theatre provides us with an exciting ground to experiment, develop and share before taking the risks of moving to London. On deciding how MTExperiments would best support the growth of new work, we noticed a lack of space for new work to be experimented with and showcased to audiences without it growing to a full production. An interesting intersection was noticed in our work with the community of Derby. Here existed a keen audience frequently trying the diverse array of theatre available to them. To me, it made perfect sense to bring new work to this already keen audience in a cinema inspired format. We encounter trailers before filmed media almost every day. By allowing new work to have an extended preview prior to the ‘Feature Presentation’, an already keen audience get to engage in something new at its genesis.”

Following this, we present our Feature Presentation: Jonathan Larson’s iconic legacy: RENT. Performed by a stunning community company, this pop cultural phenomenon exploring love, finding your voice & living for today is reframed to a contemporary, socio-political environment. Director Matt Powell comments “RENT holds a very special place in my heart after being part of a spectacular production several years ago. The pop cultural phenomenon touches everyone who encounters it. I’m excited to ignite the show with a new energy with an ambitious team & community company.”

Alongside the Main Stage activity, The Bar will be transformed into The Life Café where a variety of works will be showcased. From short films to live performances, installations to discussions, the space will celebrate the diverse range of musical theatre on offer. Further details of this and information of Launch Events, Events, Workshops & our finale event on 11th July will follow in the build up to uprising.

Casting for RENT is now open, with full details available at www.mtexperiments.co.uk. The Commission for the Preview Slots will launch on 25th October. Tickets & a full schedule will be launching shortly.
